MCOPA Basic Handgun Safety Course (LTC-001)
The Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association Basic Handgun Safety Course. The course teaches the basic knowledge necessary to possess, transport, use, and store handguns in Massachusetts.
As a result of this training, the student will be able to:
Identify the principal parts of a handgun, and types of actions.
Identify the rules for the safe handling of handguns and ammunition.
Demonstrate how to safely operate a handgun.
Identify the potential dangers of firearms.
Identify the basic responsibilities of safe handgun ownership and use.
Identify basic firearms laws relating to handgun ownership, carrying and use, and how to safely store handguns and ammunition, and methods of securing and childproofing handguns.
NRA Home Safety Course (LTC-007)
The NRA’s Home Firearm Safety Course is a non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, and course completion certificate.
